Don’t Give In to the Tilt!

Did anybody see the story about the LoL player that put his head through a computer monitor this week? The guy was so tilted from losing that he smashed his head through a monitor in a gaming café. He smashed his head through a monitor. There were other gamers in the café that literally watched him do it, and then went back to their games as if nothing had happened!!! What the hell?! This is not a healthy way to release anger people! I’ve known more than a couple of Vainglory players that have cracked or completely broken their device because they got frustrated and angry at the game. Since this is a common problem for gamers I’ve made a list of some techniques that work for me when I need to control my anger.

Step Away From The Game This is very important. You need a break. I know you’ve been on a losing streak and you need to win one before you stop, but just do yourself a favor and take a break. If you lose another it’ll just get worse, and you’ll get angrier, and you’ll be more likely to throw your iPad across the room. Finish your game and then walk away to reset.

Breathe Taking some deep breaths is the most common way to manage anger that you’ve heard of, and that’s because it works. To make sure you’re doing it right I’ll let you in on a little secret: raising your shoulders when you breathe doesn’t actually help you take a deeper breath. Your lungs expand outwards, not upwards, when you breathe in. Put your hands on your abdomen right above your belly button, and then take a breath. You’ll feel your diaphragm, which is the muscle that controls your breathing, expand, and this is where you want to breathe from. There’s a lot of different breathing exercises you could do, but there’s a simple one I like, which is breathing in through your nose for 4 beats and exhaling out of your mouth for 4. You can increase the count to 6, 8, 10, etc., and you can switch it up by breathing in for longer and exhaling for shorter, or vice versa. This should help you slow your heart rate as well as give your mind something else to focus on, both of which should help you relax.

Exercise When you’ve got some extra angry energy getting some exercise can do wonders. I’m not saying you need to start doing crossfit or anything, just get up and move your body a bit. Go take a walk around the block, or run up and down your stairs a few times, punch a pillow, do yoga, whatever you enjoy or works for you. It doesn’t have to be for a long period of time either, just 10 minutes will do. This will help you focus on something else, get rid some energy, and release endorphins which will improve your mood. Not to mention, you’ve probably been sitting for a while, so exercise is definitely not a bad idea.

Laugh Laughter is the best medicine. If you don’t want to stop playing, go into Casual, Battle Royale, or Blitz, and do some stupid stuff. Play a game where all you do is cover the map with mines, or work on your all Tornado Trigger Phinn. Be a troll. Even better, do this with your friends on Discord so you can all cry from laughter.

Find a method that works for you, but don’t make that method be destroying pieces of technology that cost hundreds of dollars.
